The Department of Orthopedics is a key specialty at Peking University International Hospital, led by Professor Chen Zhongqiang. The department maintains close collaborations with senior experts from renowned institutions such as Peking University Third Hospital and Peking University People's Hospital, jointly forming a strong expert team. It is a modern orthopedic center that integrates medical care, education, scientific research, and rehabilitation.
Subspecialties within the Department of Orthopedics include Spine Surgery, Joint Surgery, Minimally Invasive Joint Surgery, and Trauma Orthopedics. The scope of diagnosis and treatment encompasses various types of spinal trauma and degenerative diseases, scoliosis and kyphotic deformities, as well as bone and joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. It also specializes in minimally invasive arthroscopic treatments for different kinds of sports injuries and joint diseases, as well as the treatment of limb fractures, non-unions, and bone defects.
The department widely performs precise and minimally invasive orthopedic surgeries. With the aid of advanced medical equipment, the spine surgery team carries out procedures such as percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy and spinal canal decompression for lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis. For osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, they perform robot-assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty. The team also has extensive clinical experience in managing thoracic spinal stenosis, severe kyphotic deformities, and high-grade lumbar spondylolisthesis.
The joint surgery group incorporates 3D printing technology and modern digital medical tools in preoperative planning, intraoperative navigation, and postoperative rehabilitation processes. The minimally invasive joint surgery team conducts a wide range of arthroscopic procedures for joint disorders throughout the body.
The trauma surgery team specializes in limb salvage procedures for complex fractures associated with vascular and nerve injuries, as well as soft tissue coverage using various flap techniques to repair bone and hardware exposure after orthopedic operations.
The department is also deeply involved in orthopedic education and research. It undertakes clinical education for undergraduate students at Peking University Health Science Center and is engaged in multiple scientific research projects. Numerous articles have been published in leading domestic and international peer-reviewed journals.
