To further deepen international medical exchange and cooperation, build a bridge for mutual learning between Chinese and Western medical technologies, and promote the two-way empowerment of modern clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine culture, Belgian anesthesiologist Dr. Selma Hameurlaine visited Peking University International Hospital for a dedicated tour and academic exchange. Dr. Hameurlaine was accompanied by Joshua, marketing manager of the hospital’s International Medical Center, as well as Dr. Wang Bo of the Department of Anesthesiology, and anesthesiology department medical staff.

Dr. Selma Hameurlaine is featured in the center, surrounded by Joshua Hiller, PKUIH International Medical Center Marketing Manager (L) and Anesthesiology Dr. Wang Bo (R)
The program officially began in the morning with in-depth discussions focused on the clinical development and technological advancement of the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Wang Bo first delivered a special academic presentation to Dr. Selma Hameurlaine, offering a systematic overview of the department’s organizational structure, clinical service scope, technical framework, talent development, and latest achievements in advanced clinical applications. He also provided a detailed introduction to the department’s standardized clinical pathways and experience in areas including anesthesia for complex and high-risk surgeries, perioperative safety management, and postoperative pain control and recovery, highlighting the department’s standardized and refined approach to medical care.
Following the presentation, the delegation toured the hospital’s key surgical and diagnostic areas. The visit included the hospital’s standardized operating rooms, the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, the MRI Imaging Center, the hybrid operating room, and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
During the tour, the accompanying staff gave detailed explanations of the clinical advantages of various advanced medical technologies, the innovative care model enabled by hybrid surgery, and the hospital’s full-process management system for postoperative anesthesia recovery. Dr. Selma Hameurlaine observed the hospital’s high-end minimally invasive surgical equipment and intelligent clinical systems at close range, and spoke highly of its modern and smart infrastructure, standardized surgical workflows, and rigorous perioperative care management system.

This visit also featured a dedicated exchange session on the distinctive practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine, highlighting the integration of Chinese and Western medicine. Dr. Li Wei of our hospital gave Dr. Selma Hameurlaine a special introduction to the core principles, therapeutic methods, clinical effects, and scope of application of Huangdi Neizhen acupuncture. Drawing on clinical cases, Dr. Li also explained its value in pain relief, postoperative rehabilitation, and physical and psychological recovery.
To provide a more direct experience of the unique appeal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Selma Hameurlaine observed a live demonstration of Huangdi Neizhen acupuncture and personally took part in the experience. Through this close-up encounter, she gained firsthand insight into the simplicity, effectiveness, and safety of this appropriate TCM technique, and developed a renewed and profound appreciation for the wisdom and clinical value of traditional Chinese medicine.
In the afternoon, the exchange continued in greater depth. Dr. Selma Hameurlaine returned to the operating rooms and the Department of Anesthesiology’s recovery area for a more detailed observation of the full clinical care pathway. She also engaged in a cordial discussion with a Jordanian physician at the hospital, during which they briefly exchanged views on topics including internationalized healthcare service models, perioperative nursing standards, and experience in cross-border medical collaboration, sharing insights into the development of international medical services.

Dr. Selma Hameurlaine then visited the hospital’s Endoscopy Center, where she gained firsthand knowledge of the center’s endoscopic procedures, technical standards, and clinical applications. During the visit, she held in-depth discussions with the department’s physicians and nurses on a range of key topics, including clinical standards for the use of medications in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases, standardized operating procedures for endoscopic equipment, and critical considerations in the application of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Grounded in clinical practice, both sides shared technical expertise and exchanged diagnostic and treatment perspectives, achieving mutual learning in high-quality medical resources and clinical technologies.
The visit marked an important step in Peking University International Hospital’s efforts to advance international medical exchange and promote the integrated development of Chinese and Western medicine. The event not only showcased the hospital’s strong capabilities in leading areas of Western medicine, including anesthesiology, minimally invasive surgery, and digestive endoscopy, but also served as a vivid platform for sharing the distinctive diagnostic and therapeutic culture of traditional Chinese medicine. It created a high-quality platform for China-Europe exchange in medical technologies, mutual understanding of healthcare concepts, and the sharing of clinical experience.
Looking ahead, Peking University International Hospital will continue to uphold a development philosophy of openness and collaboration, further expand international medical exchange and cooperation, and actively promote innovative integration between modern Western medical technologies and traditional Chinese medicine. The hospital remains committed to continuously improving its clinical capabilities, optimizing its international medical services, and enhancing its global healthcare influence, thereby injecting new momentum into the coordinated development of medical services in China and abroad.
Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology integrates clinical anesthesia (operating room anesthesia, day surgery anesthesia), emergency and critical care resuscitation, sedation and analgesia outside the operating room, emergency resuscitation, comfort care, and pain management. Under the leadership of Director Yao Lan, the department has become a modern clinical specialty distinguished by anesthesia for critically ill patients and comfort medical services, with innovative equipment, technology, and management concepts.
While ensuring routine surgical anesthesia, the department also provides an anesthesia evaluation clinic and ten comfort care sites outside the operating room, serving as a key support hub for safe and efficient hospital operations. Cutting-edge technologies include visualization devices, difficult airway management tools, transesophageal echocardiography, hemodynamic monitoring, and cerebral function monitoring, all representing top international and domestic standards.
These resources ensure safe and effective anesthesia for all surgical procedures and provide robust support for the advancement of comfort medicine. The Surgical Center consists of the central operating room, interventional operating room, and day surgery operating room, totaling 46 operating theaters—including 33 integrated suites, two 3.0T MRI shared operating rooms, one intraoperative radiotherapy suite, and two hybrid operating rooms. Modern intraoperative MRI, navigation, and DSA hybrid systems ensure safe and effective treatment of complex cases. The operating rooms are managed with advanced digital systems, allowing high-definition recording and broadcasting for real-time teaching and precise surgical monitoring.
To support high-level, sophisticated surgeries and enhance patient care, continual professional development of medical, nursing, and technical staff is emphasized. Peking University International Hospital has imported state-of-the-art medical devices and instruments from both domestic and international sources. The operating room nursing team is professionally trained, highly skilled, and dedicated to patient-centered care, consistently delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate medical services.
