In the past 20 years, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in China has been increasing year by year, showing a growing trend. According to the latest data from the "Report on Nutrition and Chronic Disease Status of Chinese Residents (2020)", 600 million people in China are overweight (52.2%) or obese (27.9%), ranking first in the world. Obesity not only affects body shape but, more importantly, increases the risk of chronic diseases, jeopardizing physical health. To address chronic diseases caused by overweight and obesity among residents, the National Health Commission, together with 16 governmental departments including the Ministry of Education and the General Administration of Sport in China, launched a health promotion initiative in June 2024, implementing a three-year national weight management campaign. Obesity has become a major public health issue affecting the health and quality of life of Chinese residents.
PKUIH’s Department of Nutrition established a specialized outpatient clinic: Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for Weight Loss, in 2020. Every year, key physicians are sent from PKUIH to participate in CPAM training, on topics related to the latest obesity prevention and treatment methods and weight loss techniques, and obtain training certificates. During diagnosis and treatment, our Nutrition Department follows standardized workflows recommended by the latest weight management guidelines, such as the "Obesity Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines (2024 Edition)", "Core Knowledge for Resident Weight Management (2024 Edition)", "Chinese Expert Consensus on Obesity Prevention and Treatment", and the "Chinese Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Treatment of Overweight/Obesity (2021 Edition)".
By combining outpatient services with online consultations, we provide personalized weight loss plans for obese patients through methods including dietary and exercise guidance, reasonable meal replacements, and medication-assisted weight loss. We have helped hundreds of patients successfully achieve their weight loss goals, promoting the clinical practice of medical nutrition weight loss guidelines through professional practice and exploration.
This renewed recognition in 2026 as a “Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Weight loss Training Institution“ affirms the contributions made in weight loss by PKUIH’s Department of Nutrition.
Our Department of Nutrition will take this opportunity to fully leverage its professional advantages and contribute to the development of medical nutrition weight loss in China.
