University of Chicago Medicine Delegation Visits Peking University International Hospital to Explore Collaboration in Neurosciences

On the afternoon of October 22,  a  delegation from the  University of Chicago Medicine (UCM),  including  Associate  Professor of Neurovascular Surgery Tareq Kass Hout and  James  Bae, Director of  Marketing for International Programs, visited  Peking  University  International Hospital. They were received by Mark  Wen,  Chief  International Medical Officer of PKU Healthcare Group and  Senior  International  Medical Advisor to the Board of Peking  University   International Hospital; Zhou Yongbing, Vice President of  Peking  University  International Hospital; as well as Qu Zhen, Director of  the  International  Medical Center, Deputy Director Liu Hao, Head Nurse  Li  Ning, and from the  Department of Neurosurgery, Chief Physician  Zhao  Yuanli, Associate  Chief Physician Lu Changyu, Department  Assistant  Zhang Jun,  and Resident Physician Li Zhipeng. The two sides held  in  depth discussions,  building a solid platform for closer  collaboration  in  neurological medicine between the two institutions.

At the meeting, Vice President  Zhou  Yongbing first  extended a warm welcome to the UCM delegation  and  conveyed Peking  University International Hospital’s commitment  to  openness and  cooperation to the guests who had traveled from afar.

Subsequently, Qu Zhen, Director of  the  International  Medical Center, gave a detailed presentation on  the  hospital’s  development, its achievements in building key  specialties,  and the  core strengths of the International Medical Center, giving  the  delegation a  comprehensive view of Peking University  International   Hospital’s strategy in the internationalization of medical services.

Zhang Jun, Assistant Director of  the  Department of  Neurosurgery, then focused on the  discipline’s   development, outlining the current status of neurosurgery at  Peking  University  International Hospital, its technical strengths  and  clinical  achievements, and highlighting the department’s expertise  in  the field of  neurological medicine.

Mr. James Bae, Director of  International  Programs  Marketing at UCM, shared the medical center’s  century-long  history,  its achievements in medical innovation, and its services  for  international  patients. He noted in particular that, as UCM  approaches  its 100th  anniversary as a leading medical institution, it is  planning  to establish  the first standalone cancer hospital in the Chicago  area.  He also  expressed a clear desire to deepen collaboration with  Peking  University  International Hospital across a broader range of  medical  fields,  pointing to potential areas for future partnership between  the  two sides.

Dr. Tareq Kass Hout, Associate  Professor  of  Neurovascular Surgery at UCM, spoke about prospects  for  collaboration and  academic exchange. Drawing on broader  industry  trends, he  analyzed the current status and future outlook of  neurology  and  cerebrovascular disease and underscored the importance of  close  cooperation  between the two institutions in scientific research  and  clinical innovation.

Li Zhipeng, a neurosurgery resident  at  Peking University  International Hospital, then used a clinical case  of  brain arteriovenous  malformation as an entry point to  demonstrate,  through  specific diagnostic and treatment examples, the  hospital’s   capabilities in performing highly complex surgeries and  applying   cuttingedge diagnostic and therapeutic technologies,  further  underscoring  the solid technical foundation for collaboration  between  the two institutions.

During the interactive session,  experts  from both  institutions held in‑depth Q&A discussions on key  topics  including the  diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular  diseases,  innovations  in neurosurgical techniques, and the development of  an  international  medical service system, thoroughly  exploring   opportunities for collaboration. The UCM expert team spoke highly  of  Peking University  International Hospital’s advanced diagnostic  and  treatment  technologies, its multidisciplinary collaboration model,  and  the quality of its  services for international patients. They  also  offered a number  of constructive suggestions on refining  cooperation  mechanisms  and launching joint research projects, providing  valuable  ideas for  translating future collaboration into concrete  outcomes.  Both sides  agreed that in the areas of medical innovation and  clinical  practice, the  two institutions can leverage their  respective  strengths,  advance together across multiple fields, and  jointly  promote  progress in medical technology and improvements in the  quality  of clinical care.

To conclude the visit, the two sides  held  a dinner, further  deepening their friendship and shared commitment  to  cooperation in a  relaxed and cordial atmosphere. At the  dinner,  Professor Mark  Win expressed his gratitude to the UCM delegation  for  their active  participation and contributions, and voiced the hope  that  the two  institutions would carry out broad collaboration in  academic  exchange,  joint development of medical technologies, and  talent  training. Mr.  James Bae, in turn, thanked Peking  University   International Hospital for its warm hospitality and stressed that  he  would work to  promote regular exchanges and cooperation between  the  two institutions  in academic, technical, and talent development fields.


The visit of the UCM delegation  further  strengthened  mutual trust and laid a more solid foundation  for  cooperation  between Peking University International Hospital and  UCM,  opening up new  space for joint efforts in scientific research  and  innovation,  academic exchange, technological collaboration, and  talent  cultivation.  Going forward, the two institutions will continue  to  uphold the  principles of “resource sharing, collaborative  innovation,  and mutual  benefit,” taking cooperation in neurological medicine as  a  key driver to  advance the highquality development of  the  discipline, help  raise the standard of diagnosis and treatment  for  neurological  diseases in China, and inject new impetus into  the  implementation of  the “Healthy China” strategy.
