Expertise

Specialised in the rehabilitation of complex and challenging bone and joint disorders, including cervical and lumbar disc herniation, various forms of arthritis, sports injuries, and postoperative orthopaedic sequelae. Main treatment approaches include thermal needling therapy, manual therapy, injections (such as ultrasound-guided therapeutic injections and platelet-rich plasma [PRP] therapy), and rehabilitation training.

Dr. GAO is the Director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Peking University International Hospital. He holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Medicine and has completed a postdoctoral fellowship; he is a Chief Physician and a master’s thesis advisor. With over 30 years of experience in rehabilitation medicine, he is a senior expert in the field.

He has long been engaged in clinical practice and research on the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders and pain, accumulating extensive experience in the rehabilitation of complex and severe musculoskeletal conditions. He has conducted in-depth research on internal heat needle therapy in particular. He also possesses extensive experience in developing rehabilitation protocols for nerve injuries and managing related complications.

Academic and social positions

He has published more than 50 articles, authored more than 10 monographs, and led numerous research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the military, and the Beijing Municipal Government. He has received several provincial and ministerial-level awards. He has supervised more than 10 graduate students.
