The Department of Obstetrics at Peking University International Hospital is part of a tertiary general hospital, affiliated with Peking University’s Eighth Clinical Medical School. It is recognized as a Baby-Friendly Hospital, a Mother-and-Baby-Friendly Hospital, and a Grade-III Obstetric Institution. The department has also been designated as a “Model Department for Healthcare Service Improvement” by the National Health Commission.
The Department of Obstetrics includes standard and premium obstetric wards and offers a wide range of specialized outpatient clinics such as high-risk pregnancy, prenatal counseling, genetic counseling, pregnancy nutrition, midwifery support, breastfeeding, and postpartum rehabilitation clinics. These services provide comprehensive perinatal care, including prenatal health management, nutritional guidance, diagnostic testing, genetic evaluation, and postpartum recovery.
The Department of Obstetrics is licensed for Grade-III midwifery and is capable of performing complex procedures such as cesarean delivery for high-risk cases, vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), emergency cervical cerclage, forceps-assisted delivery, breech extraction and rotation (both external and internal), and advanced perineal laceration repair.
The department has robust capabilities in managing critical obstetric emergencies, including peripartum hysterectomy, uterine artery ligation, uterine tamponade, and B-Lynch sutures. Supporting units such as the operating room and ICU are well equipped for managing severe postpartum hemorrhage and amniotic fluid embolism, ensuring patient safety.
Leveraging the platform of a comprehensive hospital, the department actively engages in multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration. Joint procedures include ultrasound-guided aortic balloon occlusion for placenta accreta, uterine artery embolization, laparoscopic surgery for ovarian masses or appendicitis during pregnancy, among others. MDT care is applied for the perinatal management of complicated pregnancies involving autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, thyroid conditions, diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and cardiac disease.
Additionally, Peking University International Hospital is a certified prenatal diagnosis center in Beijing. The department performs fetal anomaly and genetic disease screening and diagnostics using technologies such as medical imaging, biochemical and immunological testing, cytogenetics, and molecular genetics. Services include ultrasound screening and diagnosis of fetal malformations, amniocentesis with karyotyping, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), serum screening, peripheral blood karyotyping, genetic testing of miscarriage villi, deafness gene carrier screening, and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) carrier screening. Genetic chip and sequencing services are also available in cooperation with third-party laboratories.
The Department of Obstetrics emphasizes a balanced development of clinical care, teaching, and research. It undertakes several national and provincial research projects, as well as teaching responsibilities for Peking University medical students and second-stage resident physician training. It also manages numerous national and municipal continuing education programs, covering critical care in obstetrics, midwifery skills, and pregnancy-related nutrition and weight management, training over 10,000 healthcare professionals to date.
