Department Introduction

The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Peking University International Hospital is a key department that has met the standards of the National PCCM program. It is also a member of the National Pulmonary Embolism and Pulmonary Vascular Disease Prevention and Treatment Collaborative Group and a participant in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital Respiratory Medicine Specialist Union for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).

The department primarily treats COPD, bronchial asthma, pulmonary heart disease, pulmonary embolism, lung cancer, sleep apnea syndrome, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases, and other respiratory critical illnesses.

In addition to general beds, the department is equipped with an independent Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) and has a full range of respiratory support equipment, including international brands of invasive and non-invasive ventilators and nasal high-flow humidification therapy systems.

The department has a high success rate in rescuing acute pulmonary embolism, acute respiratory failure, severe asthma, and severe pneumonia cases. It has a bronchoscopy suite with several advanced bronchoscope devices and offers pulmonary function testing, including reversibility tests, exhaled nitric oxide measurement, and airway provocation testing.

The outpatient clinic includes general, specialist, and special clinics for smoking cessation, pulmonary embolism, COPD, asthma, and pulmonary nodules. The department also provides clinical education for undergraduate students in clinical medicine.
