The Center for Weight and Health Management at Peking University International Hospital is a pioneering institution in China for the diagnosis and treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases. Guided by the concept of "life-cycle personalized management," the center integrates prevention, clinical care, and rehabilitation into a comprehensive medical system.
As a national benchmark in innovative care, the center is led by Professor Zhang Nengwei, a founding figure in bariatric and metabolic surgery in China, and is supported by the international platform of Peking University International Hospital and the healthcare ecosystem of Ping An Group. The center is driving a paradigm shift from surgery-centered care to multidisciplinary, collaborative obesity prevention and treatment.
Under the leadership of Professor Zhang Nengwei, the medical team has achieved numerous national milestones in the field. Between 2005 and 2006, the team performed the first laparoscopic bariatric surgery for obesity, the first laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease, and the first minimally invasive endoscopic thyroidectomy in the Beijing region. Professor Zhang and his team have pioneered multiple first-in-China and nationally leading procedures, including laparoscopic bariatric metabolic surgeries, minimally invasive laparoscopic gastric and colorectal cancer surgeries, endoscopic radical thyroidectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies, and hernia repairs.
To date, the team has completed over 10,000 minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. In the field of obesity, the team offers a broad range of advanced bariatric surgical techniques and is recognized as one of the most comprehensive and strictly quality-controlled surgical teams in China.
The center is committed to advancing the multidisciplinary and personalized management of obesity and related metabolic conditions, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care tailored to each patient's unique health journey.
